Shopping List
Listed are a few items you may want to have at home after your surgery.
Bottled water (if you do not use tap water). Carry it with you wherever you go.
Clear Liquids – any combination of the following:
- Diet gelatin
- Plain tea
- Broth
- Sugar-free beverages (examples: Diet Snapple, Crystal Light)
- Sugar–free ice pops
Protein Shakes There are a variety of shakes available. You need to find one with at least 20 grams of protein and low in sugar. We recommend you sample these shakes prior to your surgery to determine which one you will enjoy most and be able to tolerate for two weeks.
Milk
We recommend you use the “Skim Plus” brand. If you are using a powdered protein supplement you may use skim milk instead of water to mix. You may also drink skim milk as a plain beverage. If you have diarrhea following surgery, try lactose-reduced milk (Lactaid, Dairy-Ease), or add Lactaid drops to your Skim Plus.
Vitamins
There are a variety of vitamins available, including chewable, liquid and spray forms. You need to find an ADULT multivitamin.
If you want to plan ahead for your pureed food:
Fish, low-fat cheese, eggs, meat and poultry, tofu, pureed lentils, soups. Do not buy too much since your new stomach will only hold an ounce. Instead, prepare fresh, small amounts more often. Remember you need to puree everything in your mouth before swallowing.
