Gastric Band	Sleeve Gastrectomy	Gastric Bypass
An adjustable band is placed around the top part of the stomach creating a small pouch. This restricts the volume and type of foods the patient is able to consume.	Typically considered as a treatment option for patients with a BMI of 60 or higher. Approximately 85% of the stomach is removed leaving a smaller sleeve shaped stomach. The outlet valve and the nerves to the stomach remain intact and function preserved.	A small pouch is connected to the small intestines where food and digestive juices are separated for the first 3 to 5 feet so only a portion of the fat, calories and nutrients are absorbed. Requires 2 – 3 hours in the operating room.
Advantages
Does not involve any cutting or re-routing of the intestine. Adjustable and reversible. Only requires about one hour in the operating room.	Does not re-route the passage of food. Less likely to cause complications related to the malabsorption of vitamins. Only requires about one hour in the operating room.	Results in higher average weight loss. No adjustments required or artificial materials.
Disadvantages
The weight loss is slower and may require several band adjustments.	Potential for blockages in the gastric sleeve. Potential for Staple line leak.	Decreased nutrient absorption ( vitamin B 12, calcium, iron, & zinc) Dumping syndrome
